not long ago. an officer was rushed to the hospital for surgery after the shots were fired. he later died. a woman and her two children were safely taken from that home. another woman who was inside during that shooting says police did nothing wrong and it was the suspect who fired the first shot. >> i want you to know that the tacoma police department did any and everything that they could to protect and serve. they wd of him, his family and anyone else that was involved in this matter. >> last time an officer was killed in the line of duty in tacoma was in 1997. the latest now on a heart breaking case that has stunned the community. a mother from humid ranch disappeared with her two kids yesterday. their bodies were found in the family's minivan. someone passing by a closed sports authority store in lone tree spotted the van parked outside and called police.

night. their boys were ages 3and 5. they were last seen leaving bear canyon elementary school earlier that day around 2:00 in the afternoon. investigators say there is no threat to the public. neighbors are supporting the husband and father of those two young boys after his unexpected and tragic loss. >> everybody is blind sided. we had no indication, nothing like that. no abrupt behavior by means. >> labor's mother tells us her daughter was happily married and they talked about what to cook for christmas. she says her daughter and grandkids died from gunshot wounds. the preschool is holding a prayer vigil for the family tomorrow at st. phillip early learning center in littleton from 1:00 to 2:00. a gym teacher is accused now of sexually assaulting a child in jefferson county. new details in court documents reveal how it happened.

from home and called michael bueno for help. he reportedly drove her to her family's cabin where deputies found both of them drinking. he was arrested tuesday night for contributing to a minor and sexual assault of a child. he was released on $25,000 bond. he is on leave and will be in court next week. tomorrow the community is remembering a fallen state trooper and father who was killed when a driver struck him. today officers d teaching drivers a life saving lesson. jamie leary is live to tell us about this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, britt. law enforcement will be stopping drivers along this section of i-25, the southern corridor, who are in violation of the move over law. not only to educate, but possibly to cite for a violation. in summary, the law requires that when you're driving if there's an emergency vehicle trying to get through, you need to move to the right side of the road and top to clear --

if you're passing an emergency vehicle stopped on the side of the road, pass in the furtherest lane to the left. five different law enforcement agencies are teaming up today to take part in the educational campaign. this law has been in place since 2005, but officials say they felt a need to remind people it exists because they state that motorists don't know the law or simply refuse to move over. the most recent example is last friday when a truck driver drifted over the striking csp trooper cody donahue. he was pulled over investigating a crash. he was killed instantly. funeral services will take place tomorrow. law enforcement will be out enforcing the law all day today. in arapahoe county, jamie leary, cbs4 morning news. let's get to weather and traffic now. here's ashton. >> good morning to you. good morning, everybody. it is a cold start to the day. teens and 20s up and down the front range, while in the mountains we're in the single

degrees outside. sun will be up two minutes after 7:00 a.m. won't be as as much sunshine as yesterday. erie is at 19. 20 in brighton and 22 littleton. make sure the kids are prepared for the chill. 21 on average at the bus stop this morning. by noon today we'll be at 37. high temperatures a few degrees above that. 39 for the high today, because of the extra cloud cover i'm going to keep temperatures a little bit bewh were yesterday. we did hit 40 yesterday. let's get over to joel. good morning. we're watching from copter 4, got a trouble spot southbound coming down into town. this is at thornton parkway. what you're going to notice is two cars along there, the car along the left, the truck, heavy front end damage, so my guess is there is a car farther down the road with back end damage. the scene is playing out there in the left lane and it looks like they blocked off the left center lane as well.

that's going to make for a tough drive. take a look at the backups from our cdot camera, it's turned and you can see the headlights. it's in the worst possible spot. so we have speeds dipping into the 40s. we're going to see those continue to tick down and the drive times continue to tick up. if you are about to get in your car, turn on our partners koa newsradio and get the latest traffic and weather together. boulder police are investigating a deadly bike versus semi crash. night near 28th and arapahoe. boulder police say the semi driver did not initially realize he had hit that cyclist. police had to stop the driver, but he is being cooperative. the victim was a man in his 60s. story developing involving a 16-year-old victim at a party. here is video of the 16-year- old. he was killed over the weekend at a warehouse party with other teens at cherokee and arkansas.

in the parking lot. somebody pulled a gun. a second person shot in the hand. nobody has been arrested yesterday. kim leaves family and friends. >> makes me sad, too, because he had his life in front of him. like, he was going to be a great musician, but he died. >> friends are planning a candlelight vigil tomorrow night at 7:00 at utah park. aurora police and city leaders are addressing recent attacks based on racial hatred. an african american woman who her home has been attacked for the second time in two weeks. we told you about the first case last tuesday when hateful messages were spray painted on her door. now city officials want it to stop. >> hateful graffiti and other crimes have no place in our city. absolutely no place in our city. >> aurora police say african- american citizens have been

slavery and other racial slurs. a longmont family says their dream home was become a nightmare because of a mold problem they say is being ignored by the builder. john lily says he and his family have had problems since they moved in. they contacted the builder and found shoddy plumbing upstairs. they say the problem wasn't completely fixed and the mold was making them they say it was not enough. they hired an independent inspector who confirmed mold was still a problem. lily says the builder is ignoring the issue. >> it's been months now and we've given them everything they ask for and they never admit mold is a problem. >> the health issues have forced them to move into a temporary apartment. they have even slept outside in a tent at times. the builder says they did two indoor air quality tests and

issues and no further action is needed. you can read the builder's entire response on our web site at cbsdenver.com. president-elect donald trump travels to indiana today to announce a deal to keep about a thousand jobs at a carrier air conditioning plant. it's a promise he often made on the campaign trail. >> companies like carrier, simply fire their workers and move their operations to mexico. guess what? not going to be so easy to do any more. >> trump will air conditioning employees today. in a statement carrier credits "an improved more competitive u.s. climate" and incentives by the state. the president-elect says he will take himself completely

,, ,, welcome back, everyone. sitting a little less may help people with type two diabetes control their blood sugar levels. this is the news in health. european researchers found standing and light walking are a good alternative to traditional exercise to keep diabetes under control. and this story, a new study at brown university connects white wine with an increased risk of melanoma. researchers found each glass of

associated with a 13% increased risk of melanoma. beer, red wine, and liquor did not seem to strongly affect skin cancer risk. and new evidence shows aspirin can help older adults live a little bit longer. research at usc find a daily low dose can help seniors reduce the risk of a heart attack and even prevent some cancers. let's turn to the weather picture now. ashton, i know you are busy. >> yes, indeed will happen next week. before we get to that, we have some snow on the way for the mountains today and maybe a little bit of snow in the metro area coming up tomorrow. this morning as we look to the east, you'll see a little bit of light now showing up there right on the horizon. 23 is the temperature. sun still not up until 7:02. it is the first day of december, so we wanted to take a quick look back at last month and 23 of the 30 days in november included above normal temperatures, including a tie

the 16th. we averaged 45.1 for the temperature. that's highs and lows together. tenth warmest november on record in denver. and that's after the fourth warmest october that we had. 4 degrees in leadville this morning. 20 in salida. 15 in greeley. highs today, close to 40 for denver and the front range. similar situation on the eastern plains. though burlington you should get up lamar, la junta mid-40s for you. you can see some cloud cover along the front range. that's one difference today compared to yesterday. we will have clouds around. we won't have the full sunshine like yesterday. two different fronts, one on the east coast, that's moving east. shouldn't be much of a weather maker for them. cold front in idaho and western montana on the way to idaho. will spread snow into the mountains. maybe an inch of two or

country today, that's it. snow possible along the front range tomorrow, especially the foothills and palmer divide, where there could be up to an inch. most of us around the metro area, we'll see snow tomorrow, but very little, if any, accumulation. dry for the weekend before our blast of arctic air arrives next week. it's coming from siberia. will be here tuesday and wednesday. highs only in the teens and expecting at least 5 to 10 inches of snow. today 39 with increasing clouds. tomorrow, 34 with light snow highs in the 40s. joel. we got a traffic alert we're following. copter 4 over a water main break, this is right at where u.s. 36 turns in to 28th there. at baseline. not sure which portion of the road is blocked off as you get right into that area. it's going to be tough for you as part of that morning commute. if this is your drive, you know probably what we're showing you here. there is a water main break and

york stock exchange. hi, jill. >> reporter: good morning, britt. investors are keeping an eye on oil prices and tomorrow's job reports. futures now pointing to a lower open. opec reached a deal to cut oil production by 1.2 million barrels a day. an oversupply has led to lower prices. oil prices shot up yesterday by that's good news for energy companies. bad news is, we'll likely be paying more at the gas pump. more than a million google accounts hit by malware. it was traced back to dozens of legitimate looking apps. once it is in there, it steals e-mail addresses and can access data from g mail, google photos

online. users can download and watch without internet connection later on. finally, britt. >> no kidding, jill. thank you so much. best news we've heard today. take a look at today's top stories now on the cbs4 morning news. a change of plea hearing is happening today for a man who admitted to blowing up a mailbox with a pipe bomb to apparentlyism press his girlfriend. this happened in april. investigators revealed surveillance video from a nearby chuck e. cheese where they identified him and his girlfriend. there's the mailbox. people in the southeast part of the country are assessing the damage this morning after more than a dozen tornadoes touched down across four states early yesterday. at least five are dead after those twisters hit alabama, louisiana, mississippi, and tennessee. those tornadoes were part of a severe weather outbreak that

the damage is very heavy. some of them very powerful tornadoes left areas devastated. ironically, the storm brought rains to tennessee where wildfires have destroyed hundreds of structures there. thousands came to mourn the soccer players from brazil that died in the fans waved their cell phones in the air and chanting the names of the players. they are still looking into whether the plane ran out of fuel. hockey fans, this is for

attention today is salt lake city. they'll have snow causing delays. here in colorado, a little bit of snow in our mountains. looks good in the midwest. kansas city, mostly sunny, 43. dallas gets to 64 with sunshine. over all better today compared to yesterday on the east coast. lots of sunshine for new york city and d.c. highs near 50 there. all major airports across the country are in good shape. let's get over to joel for the traffic. want to show you this shot from copter 4, live isn't that beautiful? you have the orange sunrise on the horizon. of course, the clouds there, and you can see all the traffic along the boulder turnpike. as you get into town at baseline, from westbound to northbound, that ramp is closed due to a water main break. those closures will last the next six to eight hours. they have to dig it up, repair it and that takes time. along i-70 not too bad. southbound coming down into

,, we hope you're warm this morning. this is the news on cbs4. i'm alan gionet. >> i'm britt moreno. it's a hot topic kind of morning. this is the news at 6:30. officers and deputies are working toer drivers who don't move over. jamie leary tells us why following the state law is more important than ever. coming up after using a bed sheet to escape from jail last week, well, a fugitive is back in a jail bed this morning. good morning from colorado's weather center. almost everybody across colorado is below freezing. we're in the teens and 20s in the denver area. that's where we will be for high temperatures next week.

heading our way. tough drive southbound coming into town. accident still in place blocking off the left two lanes in the right shoulder as well. we'll take a look at the drive times coming up. thanks a lot. as colorado prepares tomorrow to remember another police officer struck and killed on the side of a highway, officers will be out in force today to remind us all to move over. cbs4's jamie leary is live at i- 25 and arapahoe to talk about it this morning. jamie. >> reporter: we're along starting this morning law enforcement from five different agencies will be pulling over drivers in violation of the move over law. this law, it's been in place since 2005, but too many preventable accidents each year have prompted law enforcement to remind people to pull over on the side of the road. they say this morning's campaign is for educational purposes, but they could be giving citations as well.

he did leave empty handed. police say he is still out on the streets. broncos, we're waiting to hear from the broncos about whether trevor siemian will start sunday. we found out yesterday he sat out with a foot sprain from practice. coach cube back said it hatch -- kubiak said it happened on this play in overtime when he was sacked. he played the is now listed as day-to-day for the second time this year his status is in doubt. he was not ruled out for the falcons game until the saturday before. there is no hurry to make a call for this sunday. but he does sound optimistic. >> i think i'd be fine. i think at this point in the season you're not getting too many live reps in practice as it is. mentally you have to maximize that aspect as best you can.

chain restrictions are in place for commercial vehicles. we're definitely in the season now. second fugitive inmate who escaped last week from a county jail in california by rappeling by a bed sheet was arrested last night. a standoff lasted more than seven hours. the man was recaptured at a house in san jose. late tuesday marshals and police arrested a 26-year-old. they both escaped last week cutting through bars on a second story window and using a bed sheet as a rope. denver police are hoping more light will mean less crime. last night police and community volunteers went door to door in the capitol hill neighborhood handing out light bulbs to homes where police say the porches needed a little bit of extra light. this came after an experiment in the highlands ranch, excuse me, the highlands neighborhood

trying to get on and that's causing slowing. speeds into the single digits behind this accident. 43 minutes to get you from thornton to denver. joel, thanks a lot for keeping track of that. a 45-year-old veteran police officer is dead after a shooting in tacoma, washington last night. the suspect was shot and killed by police during a long standoff a few hours ago. this started when tacoma police arrived at a house domestic violence call. the officer was rushed to the hospital for surgery. police later confirmed his death. about 100 people joined in escorting that body to the medical examiner's office. a woman and her two children were safely taken out of the house. another woman who was inside the home during that shooting says police did nothing wrong and it was the suspect who fired the first shot. >> i want you to know that the tacoma police department did any and everything they could to protect and serve.

of him, his family, and anyone else that was involved in this matter. >> the last time an officer was killed in the line of duty in tacoma was back in 1997. tomorrow people will remember a state trooper and father of two killed in the line of duty when a driver failed to abide by road rules and struck him. this morning ahead of this, officers are teaching a possible life-saving lesson to drivers. cbs4's jamie leary is live at i- 25 and arapahoe to tell us about this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the move over law has been around since 2005. but officials say too many drivers don't know about it or fail to even follow the move over law. so this morning they say they're handing out citations because the fact that people don't know about it have resulted in too many needless crashes. the most recent example resulted in the death of a trooper. last friday csp trooper cody donahue was killed when a truck

line and struck him. he was over on the shoulder investigating a crash. he was instantly killed. the truck driver was in violation of the move over law. the law requires when possible that you move to the furtherest left lane when passing a stopped emergency vehicle or tow truck. if an emergency vehicle is approaching, the law requires you pull over to the right side and stop. five different law enforcement agencies are taking part in this campaign, stopping vehicles in violation of the law along the southern corridor of i-25. now, while it's for educational purposes mainly, csp troopers and law enforcement from around the metro area say they're not afraid to hand out tickets if you're in violation. funeral services for trooper cody donahue are tomorrow. we'll continue to follow that story as well. live in arapahoe county, jamie leary, cbs4 morning news. jamie, thank you. the latest on a heart breaking story that has sent shock waves through the community. a mother from highlands ranch and her two kids disappeared

found in the family's minivan. someone passing by a closed sports authority store in lone tree spotted the van and called police. jennifer laber and her sons, 3 and 5, were reported missing by their husband and father. they were last seen leaving the elementary school tuesday afternoon. investigators say there is no threat to the public, though they have not said how parents whose children attended school with the boys say this loss is absolutely devastating. >> how something like this would happen is, you know, dumb founding to me. >> we have no words for it. it's just, it's shocking and heart breaking. >> by phone laber's mother tells us her daughter was happily married and discussed what to cook for christmas. she said her daughter and grandkids died from gunshot
